How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile

A complete 2026 checklist for UK businesses. Every field, every setting, every signal that affects your ranking in the Google Maps 3-Pack.

Why Optimisation Matters More Than Ever

Your Google Business Profile isn't a digital business card — it's the single most important factor in whether customers find you in local search. Google uses the information on your profile to decide where you rank in the Maps 3-Pack.

A fully optimised profile doesn't just look better — it performs better. Google rewards completeness with higher visibility. Every empty field is a missed signal. Every outdated detail is a reason for Google to rank someone else.

And optimisation isn't a one-time task. Google ranks the most active profiles, not the ones that were set up perfectly three years ago and left untouched.

The Complete GBP Optimisation Checklist

Work through every item below. Each one sends a signal to Google about your relevance, legitimacy, and activity.

1. Choose the Right Primary Category

Your primary category is the single strongest relevance signal on your profile. It tells Google exactly what your business does. Get it wrong and you'll struggle to rank for your most important searches. Read our detailed guide on choosing the right categories.

2. Add All Relevant Secondary Categories

Secondary categories expand the searches you can appear for. A plumber might add 'water heater installation' and 'drain cleaning service'. Don't overdo it — every category should genuinely describe what you offer.

3. Write a Keyword-Rich Business Description

You have 750 characters. Use them wisely. Include your main services, your location, and what makes you different. Don't keyword-stuff — write naturally but strategically. Mention your city and core services in the first sentence.

4. Complete Every Attribute

Attributes vary by category — wheelchair accessibility, payment methods, service options (online/in-store), women-led, veteran-led. Complete every applicable attribute. These appear directly in your listing and influence search matching.

5. List All Your Services

The Services section lets you list specific offerings with descriptions and prices. This is additional keyword-rich content that helps Google match you to specific searches. Be thorough — list everything you genuinely offer.

6. Set Accurate Opening Hours

Inaccurate hours hurt trust and can suppress your listing. Include special hours for holidays. Google penalises businesses with 'hours might differ' warnings.

7. Upload High-Quality Photos Regularly

Google confirms that businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more click-throughs. But it's not just about having photos — it's about fresh photos. Upload new images every week.

8. Publish Google Posts Weekly

Posts signal activity. They tell Google your business is alive and engaged. Post at least twice a week — updates, offers, tips, behind-the-scenes content. Consistency matters more than perfection.

9. Generate Reviews Consistently

Not a burst of reviews followed by silence. Google values steady review velocity — a few new reviews every week, month after month. And respond to every single one.

10. Ensure NAP Consistency

Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical everywhere — your website, social profiles, directories, and your GBP. Inconsistencies confuse Google and erode trust.

11. Add Q&A to Your Profile

The Questions & Answers section is often neglected. Seed it with your most common customer questions and provide detailed answers. This is free, keyword-rich content that appears directly on your listing.

12. Monitor and Maintain Continuously

Google can change your profile without notice. Competitors can suggest edits. Information goes stale. Optimisation isn't a one-time event — it's ongoing stewardship.

The Reality: Most Business Owners Can't Do This Alone

This checklist looks straightforward. But executing it consistently, week after week, month after month? That's where most businesses fall behind. As dozens of business owners told us, the challenge isn't knowing what to do — it's finding the time to do it.

That's exactly why we built our 4 Ps management system — Profile, Pictures, Posts, and Praise. We handle every item on this checklist, every month, so your profile stays optimised without adding to your workload.
